You can but … well, it can get messy fast. If you don’t have a REALLY good reason to move it, you should be leaving it alone. Why do you need to move it?

    Thanks for the reply Ipstenu.

Only PDFs and word docs would be uploaded. Sometimes these documents are changed and a newer version is put online but the url would need to remain the same as the original. If wordpress puts the documents into folders based on month this makes it difficult to overwrite the file. Unless, it’s done via ftp but that’s not always an option.

Is it possible and not too much trouble to change the upload folder to just /files/ and not use year/month?

The other question I had is, the blog in my sub-site is password protected, I need to also ensure the documents are only available if logged in, is that possible too?

As you may have guessed, I’m still getting to grips with wordpress ??

    Thanks for your help.

You cannot change it to /files/, that’s reserved. And if you move the upload folder, it’ll be harder to protect the files…

Really this is somewhere where you should look for a secure document upload plugin, because while it totally can be done in WP, it’s very tricky with Multisite.

    Thanks Ipstenu.

I think it’s better for me to resort to a plugin. I don’t want to risk messing everything up.

At the risk of pushing my luck, can you recommend any plugins?

Just this: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/omni-secure-files/ and I don’t know if it works on Multisite :/ Which is the other problem.
