• In General- Settings, I changed the name of my site, and the domain name stupidly. I now cannot get in to my back office to fix it, and if I look up my website it has lost the theme, is just all white.

Please can someone help me. When I go into the log in page and log in, with Google chrome is just takes me to a blank page, with internet explorer it says ‘this content cannot be displayed in a frame’, if I try to open it in a new window it just goes back to the log in page. If I try to open it in Firefox, again it is blank.

    What do I do???

  • So therr are a couple options out there for you. First off you could go into your database and change it manually. Second you can contact your host and see if they can change it for you.

Thanks, but how do I get into the database when I can’t log in?

    try this

    go to your cpanel.
    open your file manager
and upload a fresh copy of functions.php

see, if it works. i guess this will work.

@carentyer: See Changing The Site URL ? WordPress Codex for recovery instructions.

@jherrington1: There are much easier methods than going into the database. See my link above.

@rohit Uniyal: Replacing the theme functions file will do absolutely nothing.

Thanks, but again how do I actually do that? I am in cpanel, if I go into upload it’s looking for files on my computer. Where do I find that functions.php file??

    (@carentyer)

Thanks sondogtech, will have a look at that

@carentyer: Check the link I posted and read the different recovery methods. Try the “Edit wp-config.php” method.

Do not replace the functions.php file.

do as songdogtech has said. see if it works.

Thanks, yes I’m able to get back into my backoffice- the theme has still disappeared from my website, but I was going to change that anyway. At least I can log in again which is the main thing!

Should I go back into General and change the settings back to what they were?

    Thread Starter carentyer

    (@carentyer)

Oh, now ‘General’ has disappeared so I guess I can’t!

    (@carentyer)

Also, for the future, how do I backup my site before I make changes?

    Thread Starter carentyer

    (@carentyer)

Ok, I’m back in general settings and the old domain name is greyed out so can’t be changed again (GOOD!!)

    Glad that worked!

old domain name is greyed out so can’t be changed again…

That’s because the URLs are still hardcoded in wp-config.php. You can leave them there if you want.

Go to Appearances>>Themes and select twentyfouteen, the default theme. You can also try selecting the original theme again.

how do I backup my site before I make changes?

    For general backups, try https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/backwpup/

    (@carentyer)

Thanks. I tried the default theme and it’s coming out white- in fact all pictures in my media library aren’t showing, just a little black cross.

I seem to have an issue with plugins- I’ve always had error messages re. plugins, and if I ever try to install one then my site goes down and just the error message shows when you try to go on my website.

    So I can’t install a backup plugin ??

    Who is the webhost?

Cheap or free webhosts are bad news. See Recommended WordPress Web Hosting
