I used wordpress’s instructions for changing the site url (just for the part that comes before wordpress.com) and now my site is a mess, some images show up some don’t. Links from home pages to static pages, some work some don’t. I had no idea this was going to happen, wordpress should of made it more clear in the instructions that this would happen for dummies like me! For some reason I thought because I don’t have any external links to things outside my blog, other than the images I’ve uploaded from my computer that everything would just be updated to the new url without a bunch of rigamarole. Especially since I was only changing the part before wordpress.com in the address. So what do I do? I’ve researched the support forums and can’t figure anything out.. just getting more confused. Can’t even find the settings general screen it mentions under the instructions for changing url “On the Settings->General screen in a single site installation of WordPress, there are two fields named “WordPress address (URL)” and “Site address (URL)”. Can’t find where to mess with this if I’d wanted to. Oh yeah and I’m using a premium theme, if that makes a difference.

  • I imagine if you change the url, everything would change,if you backed up your information you can start over. If not,can you reverse the action?

Well when you have a premium theme it’s supposed to back up stuff for you and everything is backed up in that all my text and images are still there, just not pointing to the right places! I don’t think reversing is possible because I permanently deleted the old url so it could no longer be used. I know there is a plugin called Velvet Blues that will search and replace all the broken links, but since I’m using a theme I can’t use plugins. Let me get a tad more specific as the weird thing is my images seem to be finding their way back without any help from me, just giving it some time. The main problem I’m having now is the following links won’t work (and I can’t edit them in the code since I’m using a theme): when going from home to static pages in the theme, the static pages all work and link correctly to each other, but when I try to go back to the home page on any of them it tries taking me back to the old no longer in existence page. And when on the home page I can open up all my posts, but again when I try to go back to the home page it again tries taking me back to the old home.

Figured it out! Such a simple solution, but not very obvious!!! Sorry to bother everyone!!!!
