• (Note: I posted this in the wordpress.com forum and was told that the site I’m referring to is self-hosted, and therefore I need to consult the www.ads-software.com forum. I understand the difference, but now in addition to my original problem and questions below, I now have two additional questions. The site I’ve been working on was originally begun and abandoned by someone other than the site owner, who didn’t know whether they their cirrusaviation.us site was in www.ads-software.com or .com. 1. How can I tell if this site is self-hosted? Does the login URL give a clue? https://cirrusaviation.us/wp-admin/post.php?post=143&action=edit
    2. If it is self-hosted, how do I find out what company is hosting it, and are my questions then better addressed to that company? Thank you!)

I’ve been building a new site for some friends at cirrusaviation.us (Editing in the WordPress CMS with domain the registered with GoDaddy). The site we will be replacing is at cirrusaviation.com (domain registered with NetSol), not sure who hosts the site. I finished the new site, and changed the URL home and site extension in the WordPress admin general/settings page from .us to .com in hopes of having the updated site appear at cirrusaviation.com. Instead, the following happened:

    1. I can no longer login to the wordpress cirrusaviation.us admin page to edit the site or correct my error.

    2. The cirrusaviation.us site I’ve been working on comes up with no theme template, homepage only, with text, images and links, but that don’t work because those permalinks have now apparently switched to cirrusaviation.com.

I’ve researched the threads, and my understanding through the “Changing Your URL” paper in the codex is that my only way back into WordPress admin is through FTP to execute the code fixes in the php files. So I downloaded Filezilla and tried to get in to cirrusaviaiton.us by inputting the cirrusaviation.us admin login page, plus my username and password (trying both ftp and sftp instead of http).

However, I’m thinking that I could also fix this issue by simply having NetSol point the cirrusaviation.com domain to the wordpress site, since the permalinks seem to have been changed to cirrusaviation.com anyway. So here are my questions:

    1. Am I right that I could fix this just by having NetSol point cirrusaviation.com domain to the wordpress site that I built?

    2. Why am I having difficulty getting into cirrusaviation.us via ftp? I’m sure I’m inputting the correct username and password, so it must be a problem with the URL I’m inputting.

    Would greatly appreciate some advice.

    1. If you change the URLs in Settings -> General, it’s self-hosted, as that’s not possible at WordPress.com.

    2. Your hosting provider is the company you are paying for hosting. It’s probably GoDaddy.

    [second section]

1 and 2. You’ll need to change the URLs back following this guide, use the direct database method: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database

    [third section]

    1. Yes, that is also a solution.

    2. You’ll need to ask GoDaddy about that. FTP is a hosting provider thing, not a WordPress thing. You’ll have your own FTP username and password through your hosting provider.

Thanks James. You’ve peaked mt interest with the phpMyAdmin download idea.

But as I was looking at it, it seemed that the program has to be downloaded in the root directory of the website in order for it to work. If that’s the case, I can’t change the URLs via that method because I can’t get access to the site files. Since I changed the URL extension in settings and now can’t access the admin panel, I thought my only way to get access was for my friends to get the FTP credentials from GoDaddy for me.

Is that correct, or is it possible for me to get access to the site by downloading phpMyAdmin on my computer and then using my normal login info to gain access?

    Thanks again for your help,

    Colin

GoDaddy (and most hosting providers) offers phpMyAdmin, you don’t have to install it. ??

Thanks James. live and learn, I guess (or in my case, push the wrong button and learn). I’ve got an email into the site owners to get the GoDaddy account info. Soon as I get that I’ll contact GoDaddy and see about making those changes. Have a a great Labor Day.
