• Hi!

I have wondered for a while now why updates for plugins have changelogs that you can view before you update and themes do not have this? Sometimes there are changelogs but you have to navigate to the theme maker’s site.
Why isn’t this in WP like it is for plugins?

  • I’ve been working on this for a few years now. There are very few people that spend time on the meta code, and even fewer that will work on Themes.
We finally got the readme.txt file required for themes, but haven’t gotten the changes in so that the data is parsed when updates are uploaded, so it can be shown in the Themes page. I’ve asked the design team on about 5 different occasions to give feedback for how it should look and to comment on the tickets, but I have gotten nothing.
We made some progress with some of the Themes tickets when one contributor got his meta environment set up so he could test, but he is very busy.
With the focus this year on Full Site Editing, that will have a big impact on what a theme is and does, so the Themes team is talking about changing everything instead of just fixing what is there.

For my own theme, I make sure my change log is visible in the screenshot. I tried to encourage others to do that, but I don’t think it caught on.

Is there some option that we can up vote request for changes? Maybe that would help?

I often read the changelog for plug-ins to get an idea of what “risk” there is in updating. People tend to think that a theme update is less “risky” but this is not true if it is your active theme (especially when you use a child theme of it).

There is a very old ticket: Theme repository – add changelog listing tab
    https://meta.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/45
and the core ticket: Support for theme changelogs
    https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/22810

Here is one for Readme.txt generated tabs on theme pages: https://meta.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/215
and the core ticket: Show readme.txt from Themes
    https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/36971

This one about Allow multiple screenshots would be easy if the readme.txt would show
    https://meta.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/969

Thanks for all the info! Wow already first mentioned years ago!

I am not familiar with what I can do to support it as this is my first post in Requests/Feedback? Obviously I would want it to be as it works for plug-ins.

Any one can comment on a ticket.
If you have ideas of how it should look, that helps, or code, or explaining the need for it, or pointing to examples of the problem to consider. Anything that moves the discussion along can help bring some attention to it, and maybe inspire someone to fix it.
Something like this is hard because it concerns the .org site as well as the admin of the WordPress software. The admin calls an API which is on .org. The .org site is populated by the database of info that is loaded whenever a theme author uploads a new version. There can be a one-off script to put all the needed data into the database, as they did when they rewrote the Plugin directory.

The problem is also that the Plugin directory was rewritten a few years ago, but Themes was not. So the back end is all different. But theme authors don’t have access to SVN like plugin authors do, so that forces a bit of a difference.

    Thanks for the explanation.
I have added a comment on the oldest ticket.
