    Hi,

I have removed some content types and taxonomies in Search Appearance settings. My question is whether removing them will affect how Google indexes my site- moving forward.

I only submitted the post-sitemap.xml and page-sitemap.xml to Google but the other content types and taxonomies were indexed as well, even though I did not submit their sitemaps. Will Google index active sitemaps even though they are not submitted? and will removing these sitemaps also remove the links from the Google index?

How can I remove the content types and taxonomies I have just removed from Search Appearance settings from the Google index?

    Thanks,

    Barnett

    Hi @barnettmsiska

If you’re using the Yoast SEO sitemap, you should only ideally be submitting the main sitemap index (/sitemap_index.xml) which would have included the categories and that content type’s individual sub-sitemaps.

If you’ve now set the taxonomies and those content types to not show in the search results (which would give them all a ‘noindex’ tag and remove them from the sitemap), Google should just be able to crawl those and find the ‘noindex’ tag and if they were indexed previously, would eventually remove them from the SERPs.

We recommend removing any submitted sitemaps and resubmitting only /sitemap_index.xml as per this article – https://yoast.com/help/submit-sitemap-search-engines/#google-remove
