Changes only accur on parent theme, not child theme

I am trying to make a change to my child theme. It’s one of the .css files, but not style.css
When I make the change, and then put this file in my child theme directory (I am doing this via ftp), nothing happens. When I make the change on the original css sheet of the parent theme, I do see the change. Why is this?
Also, why do I not see the files that I put into my child theme directory show up in appearance-editor on my dashboard? I do see style.css, but whatever else I upload to my child theme directory, does not come up in the editor in my dashboard.
