changing background color

Just moved from wp.com to .org and installed Karuna. Not too much difference but on my homepage, I can only change the bottom background color. Previously, it also changed the portion above my featured photo. The top ribbon could also be changed color-wise. I had a great color scheme between the two and in the .org version, it’s just not cutting it. Help!
