    Greetings, all…

We recently migrated all of the chapter sites associated with our non-profit association from Drupal to WordPress 3.0. Until now, the sites (powered by the multisite functionality in 3.0) have been in a staging area (e.g., chapters2.example.org) while the Drupal sites remained live (e.g., chapters.example.org). This weekend, I’m looking to reverse the sites and change “chapters2” to “chapters.”

Now, I’ve had HORRIBLE luck changing the URL of WordPress sites in the past – and that was even on the standard version of WP, not the multisite version. It never fails: something goes awry and I end up in a panic. Well, I’ve been reading up in preparation of the switchover and I can’t quite find all of the information I need.

If I’m not mistaken, if I had a standard installation of WordPress, I’d just update the URL in the Settings > General page, right?

Well, the URL option isn’t available in Settings > General and I believe this is because I’ve got multisites enabled. So, I would change the URL in the wp-config.php… but what else?

I’ve found the following article but it doesn’t seem to apply to the MU version so I want to make sure I’m not missing anything: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL

SINCERE apologies if this information is duplicated but I’ve literally scoured both these forums and the Interwebz in general for 6+ hours over the course of two days.

  • Oh yeah, you’re gonna love this answer…. ?? not really.

when the network is running, the domain name is stored in *multiple* places in the db.

How comfortable are you in mucking around in there?

    Wow, prompt response, thanks!

Pretty comfortable, I suppose. Are there queries to run or am I manually looking for things? And this would be in addition to changing the URL in wp-config, right?

    Thanks again Andrea!

What about backing up the database to an SQL file, finding and replacing all instances of chapters2.example.org with chapters.example.org, and then re-uploading the DB? Would you recommend this?

    Thanks!

Yep, actually I would recommend that.

Yep, that’s what I did yesterday. Worked out well! Had some weird issues with my theme afterwards but it was just those two steps that I needed:

    – change the URL in my wp-config file
    – do a find/replace of the old/new domain in the SQL file that I had backed up.

    Thanks Andrea!

    Hello,

Perhaps I tinkered around with this too much, and doing this isn’t working for me. I am needing help and willing to pay for someone to look at my files and db and see what I could be missing.

I changed from a static IP to a URL. Did the search and replace, copied the whole database and pointed the config file to the new db. As soon as I enable multisite, I get the database connectivity error. Everything worked great until I switched the URL.

Please contact me ASAP. I need this resolved.

    Thanks!

This is one of the most useful posts I have found. Changing site_url in the database is a daunting task and very easy doing it this way, kuddos ??
