• Hi,
I need some help about changing my dashboard account email.
I created my website about a month ago through Bluehost hosting. When I log into my WordPress dashboard (https://albofbutter.com/wp-admin/), and click on my account in the top right corner, I see my information and it says automatically that my account email is [email protected]. I’m not sure what this email is, because I know that I did not make it. Instead, when creating my website, I selected the option to purchase a Microsoft 365 email address and made it [email protected].
I’m confused as to where the ‘admin’ email came from, and I’m really hoping that it’s not an actual address and is only a placeholder since I don’t want to be paying for the ‘lindsey’ email if I have a free one already.
But anyway, despite my confusion on where this ‘admin’ email came from, I tried to change the email settings to the ‘lindsey’ email since I know it works and I can access it (unlike the ‘admin’ email). So I typed in the new address, clicked save and waited for an email to confirm it.
Now, this is where my real issue comes in. WordPress says that “If you change [email address], we will send you an email at your new address to confirm it. The new address will not become active until confirmed.” Look at how it says I will receive an email at my NEW address to confirm it. My new address is the ‘lindsey’ email, but I haven’t received any email at that address. I first tried making this change in the first few days of creating my website, waited a few weeks to receive an email, and never did. So I cancelled the pending change, and tried it again and I still have not received an email. What?
How can I fix this? This is a big issue because right now a lot of plugins etc. are sending information to the email address specified in my account (the ‘admin’ email since the ‘lindsey’ email is still pending confirmation), and I CANNOT access it. Some of these things include important information about backups or if my site goes offline. Please help me resolve this.
    Thanks.

  • Hi,

If you are not able receive the confirmation email after resetting the admin email then first try to test the same admin email address which you are setting by using this plugin and send an email to verify if emails are being sent from your website without any issues. If it does not works then contact your hosting provider.

Also try to see in the JUNK folder sometimes such emails go in the SPAM or JUNK folder as well. Sometimes there are server issues as well due to which emails are not being sent. You should again give a try again after some time.

The last solution will be changing from the database table. Simply go to the _options table and edit admin_email field and your admin email address.

    Hi,
    Thank you for the response.

What do you mean by “after resetting the admin email”?
I have NO access to this admin email, and frankly it doesn’t exist (I’ve tried logging into that email address, and Microsoft just said that it was not a valid email address, no matter what password I attempted). I need you to understand that I have no idea where this email is coming from, and I have no way of seeing emails that are sent to this address. Because to what I can tell, this admin email is not a real email. Which is why it is crucial to me to change it to the lindsey email that I can see.

I’m not sure how you expect me to try your first solution with the plugin since even if I installed the plugin and got it to send an email to check if my website is sending emails properly, I would NOT be able to see this email. It would go to the admin email and again, I CANNOT see that email address.

Next, I have checked my spam and junk folders, and there’s nothing there either. Just to be clear, these folders are within my lindsey email (the “new” email that I’m trying to confirm), not in the admin email, since I can’t access that email account.

Finally, where do I find the database table? Do you mean this as in go into my wordpress dashboard, go to settings, and the option that says Administration Email Address? Because first of all, I am completely new to wordpress, so I don’t know what else you could mean by database table, and second, when I go there, it again is automatically set to be the admin email, and says that there is a pending change to the lindsey email. Again, it also says the same message “This address is used for admin purposes. If you change this, we will send you an email at your new address to confirm it. The new address will not become active until confirmed.” Again, take note of how it says it will send an email to my NEW address to confirm it (the lindsey email) and I still have not received an email.

If you could please explain some of this, that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,

I have understood you are saying you do not have access to existing admin email address and you want to change it. If you have access to the admin dashboard of your site please install the plugin i have mentioned. Follow the instructions in the this screenshot

Next, I have checked my spam and junk folders, and there’s nothing there either. Just to be clear, these folders are within my lindsey email (the “new” email that I’m trying to confirm), not in the admin email, since I can’t access that email account.

I was referring that when you will update your new admin email address under Settings > General that requires email verification. That verification email will be sent to your new email address. If your website is sending emails without any issues only then you will be able to receive the confirmation email. In the confirmation email there will only be a link once you click on that it verifies the email address and it will be updated inside admin dashboard in General settings as well.

You can find the table inside your database and for that you need to access your CPanel and find the database connected with the WP site and then go into that database find the options table and then find the admin email field to update it. It definately requires more work and i will recommend you to ask your hosting provider to help you in that as you are new to WP. I hope it will be helpful.

    Hi,
Sorry for taking so long to respond.

    Thanks for your reply.
I installed the plugin; however, it won’t let me send the test email without configuring an SMTP mailer first. I have no idea what an SMTP mailer is, and I tried googling and reading the help pages but I still don’t understand it. I clicked through all of my SMTP mailer options, but some of them cost money, make me create an account etc., and obviously I do not really want to do that. Overall, I’m not sure which SMTP mailer is the right one for me to select. As you know, I already have my email set up (Microsoft 365: [email protected]); however, it won’t let me select the Microsoft 365 mailer because apparently it’s only a pro option. Although, I don’t even know if my email and this SMTP mailer thing are at all correlated. Anyway, could you help with this?

As well, for the other method, I can access my cpanel, but I am not at all familiar with the platform so I don’t know how to access the database and options table you are referring to. I tried exploring the options that said database; however, most of them only gave me the option to create a new database, and the only other one led me to a new tab with information I did not understand and a confusing configuration. If we cannot get this plugin/test email/SMTP mailer method to work, then I will look into contacting Bluehost since I cannot figure out how to do this database method on my own.

Let me know if you can help with the SMTP mailer.
    Thanks again.
