I’m moving my site to a new root domain name, but keeping all the WordPress content — including all post URI slugs — identical. All posts will be redirecting via htaccess 301 redirects, and I will be informing Google that the site has moved permanently to the new root domain address.

Do you know whether the post views counts produced by your plugin will all start over again from 0, or will the moved posts will automatically inherit the prior counts stored by google’s analytics?

Although I’m excited about the new root domain for my site, I’m sad about the possibility that all post counts get reset to zero and start over again, since quite a few of my site’s posts have many thousands of views in their counters.

One more thing: I will be using the exact same google analytics tracking tag on the content at the new root domain as is being used on the current root domain, so, in addition to the post slugs being identical, that might be the key to having this work ok. (And only the new root domain’s posts will be active once the switch is made.)

    Thanks!

And incidentally, I’m till loving your plugin!

Here’s an update on my question (above). Turns out, since I kept the exact same google analytics tracking tag on the content at the new root domain, all the analytics data from the old site accrued to the identically named (with identical WP URI slugs) on the new site. Then, when I reconfigured the Google Analytics API as described in the Google Analytics Post Pageviews plugin’s settings instructions, after I connected with the API the plugin offered a drop-down menu from which I could import the counts from the previous version of the site. So now my new site has inherited all the counter values that the previous version had, and none of the big numbers have been lost. Amazing! Thanks again to Maxime for such a super plugin!

    HI!

Thanks for the kind words, glad you made it work! As you said, as long the paths behind the domain name are the same you shouldn’t have any trouble. Thanks for the feedback!
