Changing feature image display area for portrait images

I often see this issue in many themes that feature images are just showing from the middle of the image. This works fine in most of the landscape images but having real problem for portrait images specially for someone photos. I don’t want to see headless photo for models :). What will be the solution to this, I don’t want to manually crop for every post, hoping some one can throw some light.
