It looks like in the version 2.8.5 it is necessary to change file permissions in order to make an edit in the theme editor. I didn’t have to do this with previous version.

Though I know how to use FTP to alter a file’s permissions setting, I am not sure (1)which file or folder I am supposed to change and (2) what permission to change it to.

For instance I am trying to edit “footer.php”. At the bottom it does say: “You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes.”
Looking in my FTP program at the file permission already assigned to this file, it says: rw-r–r
I assume that means that the user (left column)already has a w, meaning it is writable by user. Perhaps admin is not user? If not then in which column (user, group, world) do I need to add the w?

In this context, the user/owner will be the server.

    I am still really confused.

(1)Do I need to change the permissions on the “footer.php” file only or on the whole folder it’s in?

And (2) what exactly should the permission be?

I can’t believe this has been made so complicated in this version when it worked so well in previous versions!!!!!!!!
I know I could just pull the file out, edit it and reupload. Done. But I would like for my client who I set the blog up for to be able to use all the features himself.
