Changing language file

Your docs tell us to edit the po file to change things like tab names, or core labels. But the language files are overwritten everytime a plugin update is released, which seems to be every few days/weeks. So this not a sustainable way of editing labels – especially those that appear on the frontend.

I noticed there is a hook for specifying a new file location also in your docs. But, there is no example of how this could be used.

Can you provide a more detailed example for the um_language_file hook? I’m thinking of adding the custom language file to my theme so it’s not overriden when you update the plugin.
