Changing permalink gives 404 page

  • Hey guys, I have a problem with the permalink option.

    I JUST installed a fresh copy of wordpress on my new server and changed the permalink; however, if I change it to anything else but the default option – all pages give me a 404

    I used to be able to change the permalink just fine so what happened?

    and I never had to write any htaccess files before (2 weeks ago) so what gives?
