• I have more than a hundred pages on my website, under half a dozen main pages. So the structure of my custom permalinks is:

    sitename/topic/pagename

I want to introduce subtopics, because I am going to start using wp_list_pages to list other pages under the same topic, but now the list under some topics is getting very long. But when I ad subtopics, I get this permalink:

    sitename/topic/subtopic/pagename

I don’t want that because it is too long, and it busts all my links. Is there any way I can structure my permalinks so I can keep the existing URLs but have the subtopic structure for my page lists?

    Thanks.

  • Use a good plugin to set up 301 redirects from the old URL to the new URL. There’s a lot of them available.

As for the length of the URL, that’s realyl not an important factor these days unless you are trying to promote something in print, in which case you’d use a 301 redirect from the short URL to the “real” URL anyway.

OK, thanks, that’s certainly a way to achieve the result, sothat’s good. Is it the only way? Is there no way to change the permalinks the way I want?
