I believe that the official answer is “it should,” because it depends entirely on server configuration. Try it out, it should only take a minute and you can always change back.

Thanks. It works on my server. Is there any documentation about this? I am wondering how this is implemented in WordPress.

Not that I know of. I know that WordPress keeps a history of past permalink structures, and the past structures technically continue to function, but WordPress attempts to 301 (permanent) redirect them to the new structure.

Thanks a lot! Seems to work fine on my server right now. Great solution, best way.

    Cheers!

    You’re welcome!

It does but gives lots of 404 errors in between..
I would suggest monitor your Google webmaster tool 404 error tabs…

Also install 404 smart link plugin….
To make sure when you change your permalink it should be 301 perma-redirection, I would suggest use deans’ perma redirection plugin.
