Changing the design of Profile Card in Member directory

In my page I have displayed the member list through short-code. According to the defualt design of the profile card, both in grid and list view, the profile card covers lots of space on the page. For example, in my particular page, the display of member list in grid view is stretched horizontally in a rectangular area, which I want to redesign in my own way.

I want only to display the profile pictures inside the circles, one after another; and get rid of the white wrapper covering the whole row. How could I achieve that? Can I edit the CSS and change according to my preference?

I will appreciate if somebody can help me regarding that.
