Changing the language from english to portuguese

The MO is the end of the line. The MO provides full support for a given language. To install French language support, a user would place fr.mo into the wp-includes/languages directory of his WordPress installation, and change the define(‘WPLANG’, ”); in his wp-config.php file to define(‘WPLANG’, ‘fr’);.
Same thing for other languages: he would use the MO file corresponding to his language and replace the country-code in the wp-config.php file with the one that matches the MO : ‘hi’, ‘es_ES’, ‘pt_BR’.
BUT!!! indeed, there is no /wp-includes/languages directory in there So I don’t know what to do either atm. You, need to complile the PO to a MO. But where to put the files? no Idea

Hi! I think this could help some people:
We just changed our wordpress site “www.altominho.org” to brazilian portuguese with the .mo file. But we had a problem with the UTF-8 and iso-8859-1 .
The posts were allright but we had to write the new posts in raw ANSI codification in order to get the special characters of our language ( ?§, ?￡o, ??, ?3, etc…). That was because the brazilian .mo file was “compiled” in UTF-8 codification.
So, what I did was open de brazilian “.po” file available from different webs, with the program poEdit.exe , freely available in ” https://poedit.sourceforge.net “.
The next thing I did was changing the format of that “.po” file with poEdit to iso8859-1 and saved it, obtainig the .po and .mo file in that directory. Next thing was uploading the new .po file to de wp-includes/languages directory and changing language in wp-config.php . Last thing was changing the options in the control panel to read in iso-8859-1 and not UTF-8.
Ok, the thing is working. Thanyou to all people at wordpress and support forums.

Thanks for the tip but there is a problem… Quinta-feira is shown in the calendar as T… Can we do something about that?

Using 1.2.x? And what is quinta-feira? I assume it’s Tuesday or Thursday ??
No, you can’t do anything about it. Some clever English-speaking guys thought that for the days of the week would be enough only 5 letters in every language (since T and S are used twice in English) – so there is no way to translate 7 day name abbreviations because in the original there are only 5.
Fixed in 1.3 though.

try this:
don’t translate any strings realted to the days of the week or moths in the PO file, then make an MO file from it. Then translate the strings inside the locale.php file in your wordpress installation. (only good for WP1.2).
This is sort of a hack, that is why i didn’t post an incomplete MO file in my website. The problem will be corrected in WP1.3.
