changing the number of portfolio items

I would like to have more than three portfolio items on my front page, 6 or 12 or so. I found an explanation on how to do that but that’s for the .com theme. Can’t find out how to do it on my .org site. Help?

If you look in the Customizer’s Theme Options panel, you should see an option to select 3, 6, or 9 portfolio items for the homepage – this is the same whether your site is self-hosted or running on WordPress.com. Here’s a screenshot from a self-hosted site of what you’re looking for:
You’ll need to activate Jetpack’s Custom Content Types module to use portfolios on a self-hosted site.
