Ok, so I have a thread open already, my html isn’t working https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/html-not-working-in-blog?replies=16

One of the recent suggestions was to make a child theme. Thats way over my head. But I wondered if just changing my theme would help the issue at all. The current theme is Twenty Eleven. My blog is to be purely a fundraising blog, and was given to me for this use by the non profit 501(c)(3) charity. Can I even change the theme? Can I use/make a child theme? I watched a youtube video on changing themes. It said to go to your dashboard and click on themes, and then showed 2 tabs one saying managing themes and one install themes. When I click on themes, I just get a page that says Themes 1 and talks about the theme twenty eleven. I tried clicking on customize, and theme options but there’s nothing about changing the theme.

Now I know there are big differences between wordpress.com and www.ads-software.com, so maybe I’m trying to go about things the wrong way for .org?

How do I update my theme to twenty fifteen to see if that solves my html issue? Also, is it possible to update my version? In my html thread someone tested out the code that gets changed when I try to publish, and in his version it worked perfectly. Can I change my theme or version when I’m not the main blog?

Apologies for starting a second thread, but I thought it might be best to address these specific questions in a new one so things aren’t getting too mixed up and confusing.

  • Can I even change the theme?

If you have admin status for the site, you should be able to go to Appearance > Themes, and at the top of the themes page you should see a button that says ‘Add New’.

How do I update my theme to twenty fifteen…?

That isn’t an update. That’s a different theme from your current Twenty Eleven theme. You can add that one and preview it to try it out, and still keep the current one.

Can I change my theme or version when I’m not the main blog?

That sort of sounds like this may be a multi-site setup, and you might have to have the super-admin add the theme for you. Some sites are set up with admins for each blog, and a super-admin overseeing them all.

When I go to appearance > Themes thats where all I see is the 1 and talking about my theme being twenty eleven. Do I take that to mean no I do not have the ability to change my theme? I’m the admin for MY blog, but my blog is not the main one, its just a blog given to me by the charity as I explained above. Your instruction on how to change the theme sounds like the videos I watched, and I do not have that option.

If I do not have the ability to change the theme, I assume creating a child theme is pointless for me?

Sorry for the confusion in words used, but by update I meant change my theme. I used update, because I currently have twenty eleven and so twenty fifteen would be “updated” from that. But it appears I do not have the ability to change my theme?

All I really want is to get the html to work on my blog, but it was suggested to do a childs theme to try and fix that, so I’m trying to explore that possibility. It seems thats not a possibility.

What about changing versions? Is that more complicated than changing themes? If I don’t have the ability to change my theme, do I assume I do not have the ability to change my version? I currently have 3.8.5. An individual from my previous thread tried my html on a version 4.1, and it worked perfectly for him. I’m just trying to get this figured out.

I’m guessing that your site is set up so that you cannot change your theme or update WP, and possibly cannot post code into your pages/posts.

Can you ask the people who set up this site about these questions?

BTW, twenty fifteen is not an update to twenty eleven – it’s a totally different theme.

If you don’t see the ability to add a theme in the way I mentioned above then I think you need to ask someone who has does have it.

From your other thread, it doesn’t sound like you really want to get into creating a child theme and it shouldn’t be necessary anyway if you can get the button to work as it should in a page. (I’ll leave that to the other thread.)

It would be in the best interest of those who control the site and for you as well to get the WP version updated for security and performance reasons.

Closing this thread as per the forum rules, duplicates aren’t really helpful – let’s keep this discussion in one thread – it’s way too confusing to have parallel conversations on what is essentially the same topic.

@bill – please jump into the other thread if you wish :)! Your help is always awesome.
