Wanted to ask about this “Media Library Folders” plugin, before I actually use it.

    Condition
This plugin, as I understand how it works, it changes the URL of the image from the WordPress default (year/month number), to use the image folder name created by this plugin.

    Question
If I have to switch out this plugin to a different one, for example due to a compatibility issue with a premium theme, and knowing that this plugin changes the image URL in WordPress, what would happen to the image URL in WordPress, especially since images already inserted into documents use the URL created by this plugin?

    Thanks

The default, WordPress saves files and images to year/month folders in the wp-content/uploads folder. The site administrator has no ability to create new folders or move images from one folder to another. Media Library Folders adds functionality to WordPress to create new folders on the server and move files within the media library. Folders created by Media Library Folders and files upload to those folders remain and are available through the Media Library even if the plugin is deactivated or removed from the site.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think, by your description you have confirmed that the plugin will create a new folder on the server and moves selected media files from where they were (in the default year/month folders) to the new folder created by the user using this plugin, … which does change URL of the media item.

So then, what do you recommend for WordPress sites that have a large number of images and many posts/pages with the old media URL’s in them if we use this plugin? (— I ask this because that could be a lot of manual changes in every post/page)

    Hi

I believe you did not understand what Alan indicated.
Existing images that are already on the server stay where they are!
Only if you start using Media Library Folders, you can create new folders yourselves!. No links are altered if you leave the original images where they are.

If you start organizing the images, by creating new folders and transfer the original images to the new folders then the links are changed!

If you install Media Library Folders, and start moving the existing images, you do not need to alter links on individual pages. Media Library Folders does that for you.

Peter, thank you for your clarification.

Yes, when files are moved with Media Library Folders their links in standard WordPress posts and pages are updated. In case where page builder theme or plugins are used the links to media files may be stored in a different format. We have tried to add code to update links in these different formats in the most popular page builders. Thus, it is important to check before moving lots of files that the link update process is working on the site by doing some test moves and checking the results.

As for an existing site with lots of files, I suggest leaving the old files where they are and focus on organizing new files uploaded to the site.

Yes I did understand. I merely jumped to what Alan said per your statement (#2 quoted above).

If you install Media Library Folders, and start moving the existing images, you do not need to alter links on individual pages. Media Library Folders does that for you.

That piece of information was the major concern. I went back to the plugin description and saw that it did say something about that ( sorry, I missed that), but was in the middle of a long undivided paragraph.

Suggest – take that single piece of information about updating the links in posts and pages and make it one of the FAQ’s. It is important enough to make it easier to see and read, as many would, as myself, missed that part.

    Thanks for the help.
