I have a WP only hosting package, and as a result, no access to the FTP. I created my site on a temporary URL, so that the old one (on the old host) would still show. When the new site was ready, I pointed the new host package to the domain, as advised by my hosting company and thought all was well… and for the most part it is.

You see the new site when you go to mydomain.com, but when you click on a child page, instead mydomain.com/about, the URL becomes temporaryurl.com/about. I’d really like to have all the links look professional, but as far as I can tell from the codex, the way to change this is through the wp-config file, which I can’t access, since I don’t have access to the FTP.

After several agonizing hours with a call center, the best advice they had was to change it through the dashboard. However, I’m not sure they know what they’re talking about. I know that if I make a mistake on the dashboard, I can create a situation where the only way to get back in is to fix the wp-config file… and since I can’t access it, I’m very leery of making any changes there. When asked, the call center refused to say that they would be able to help me get back in, so I have no idea how I’d even fix things if I do screw them up.

Can I change this safely through the dashboard? If so, how exactly?

    Many thanks.

  • Hi, I appreciate your nervousness and caution with this! But, I think you definitely want to do this through the dashboard:
Settings -> General -> WordPress Address (URL): https://mydomain.com. I’ve used this setting when moving sites and haven’t had any problem. If the current value of the setting contains your temporary url, then I’m doubly sure of it.

Also, you want to make sure about your DNS settings, you can open a terminal window and ping both urls. ie “ping mydomain.com” and “ping tempurl” — if they resolve to the same IP, you should be set to go.

Thank you! Just to clarify, right now, the settings are:

    WordPress Address: https://www.temporaryurl.com
    Site Address: https://www.temporaryurl.com

And you are saying I should make it:

    WordPress Address: https://www.mydomain.com
    Site Address: https://www.temporaryurl.com

Or do I change them both?

As far as the DNS settings.. you’ve lost me. How do I ping? What is a terminal window?

Hi, You want to change them both, so it looks like this:

    WordPress Address: https://www.mydomain.com
    Site Address: https://www.mydomain.com

If you post the actual domain names, or send them to me at vernonhorn at gmail, I’ll double check the DNS settings for you.

    This worked perfectly. Many thanks!

@cj123 please remember to mark this “resolved” – it helps the volunteers when they don’t have to read through posts that are already resolved, and saves us time so we can help others who still need help. Thanks!

Glad vernonhorn was able to help you ??
