Characteristics Gone/Hidden

Suddenly, without warning or reason (deactivated all plugins, removed all custom functions, everything back-to-basics) my characteristics are gone. Looking further, searching for them in the product back-end brings up the products that would contain the characteristics, yet there is no field visible to see them.
Anyone?
