The allowed and reserved characters in URLs are a web-wide thing, not just an issue with WordPress.

    Im not being clear.

I would like to have urls like:

    https://www.example.com/tag/shopping-and-f***ing/

Asterisks are reserved characters for URLs (they have a special function), and thus WordPress correctly does not allow users to manually add them to URLs. You can instead use custom post slugs that include —, xxx, or the actual word letters in place of the asterisks.

For more info on characters in URLs and a table of reserved characters, see:

Also, note how this forum’s software (which is not WordPress) broke your above URL at the asterisks.

Iridiax i see *sound of penny dropping*

thank you ever so much for your help, i’ll have a rethink.

As an additional question: How can I use, in my link list, URLs with special characters (which are legal), such as süddeutsche.de, for example. Right now, WP is stripping them out.
