Philopil, you’re not the only one who got the spammy links. I got them too. It’s very sneaky. Beware of this. Your search ranking can get easily downgraded if the search engines detect a lot of spam.

Thanks, I promptly removed (deactivated and deleted) the plugin and of course, all spam links went away. Thankfully, I found WP-PageNavi plugin at https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-pagenavi/ which even works better and is compatible with my theme. As simple as installing and activating and, not only did it add the page number squares, it removed the comments “older posts/newer posts. Up to you to check it out. Thanks for your input.

I’ve been wanting to try WP-PageNavi, but I didn’t know if I had to change the code or something. Does it require having to change some part of the theme so it can work?

No code at all. Just installed and activated. You then have settings you can play with but I left everything as is. Good luck with it.
