• I have been trying to install a plugin for wordpress and I’ve had one problem after the other:

I have tried to visit the /wp-admin/plugins.php page, but I get the message “cheatin’ uh”. Upon Googling, it seems other people have had this message:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/cheatin-uh

However, they cite the occurrence of this message upon upgrading to a new theme and attempting to upload an image – NOT attempting to access the plugins page. I am definately an administrator of the site and it’s definately www.ads-software.com NOT wordpress.com

The reason I’m attempting to go through the plugins.php page is becqause I have the case of the missing “plugins” button from the admin bar.

According to the linked thread, the generic troubleshooting steps are:
    1. – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the
    problem…
I can’t do that since I can’t access the plugins page

    2. – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
I am currently using Custom Community theme, version 1.8.2.

    3. – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin.
Again, I can’t access the plugins.

Any suggestions? I have FTP access but no access to Hostgator. I would appreciate any help even just in understanding why I get this message, how to make the message screw off, or how to make my “plugins” button appear.

    Thanks!

  • Rename each plugin folder using FTP to old-plugin_folder_name

Thank you – Where might I find my “plugin” folder in FTP? I checked here https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/where-do-i-find-the-plugins-folder-in-ftp?replies=6
But I also don’t see a “themes” folder and I don’t know “Where ever my blog is installed”.

Note that I obviously didn’t install this blog myself! If you want to know which folders I have in my FTP I will happily tell you.

There is no way for us to know this for sure…it varies greatly by host and can be any folder name one wants etc…why do you not have access with the web host?

“why do you not have access with the web host?” Because I’m not the one who set up the host, I don’t talk to the person who did, and they never sent me login information for the host. All I know is the host is Hostgator.

After extensive browsing of the FTP files, I have found a folder which contains a file named “plugins.php”
    /groups/single/plugins.php
There is also another such file under
    /members/single/plugins.php

I tried renaming both of those folders with “old-” before their name, but that hasn’t seemed to do anything yet.

After reading the .php code, it would seem that these files are for BuddyPress, which came as part of the theme I have. The only plugin installed is “NextGEN slider”, which the aforementioned individual installed.

Very sorry I can’t be more descriptive. This is proving to be remarkably frustrating.

    You need to resolve this.

    Okay! Great advice!

Should I perhaps set up a new host, or might there be a way to get access to the current host? I’ve tried contacting this person but they won’t respond – I don’t think I’ll be able to get a hold of them.

I guess I’ve been trying to skirt around that issue for a while now and keep having more and more problems becuase of it… it might be time to just pay for a new service entirely and move everything over/re-install.

Unless you also have access to the DNS system to prove site ownership, that will not happen either. You need to prove to a new host you own the site and have permission to admin it.

Okay! Well, thanks a bundle for your help. I’ll get on that tomorrow.

Theme is not compatible with lead
    Delete theme
    It’s OK
