Checkbox to not select subcategories

Is there a way when filtering the product categories that if you select a top category, the sub categories aren’t automatically checked as well? In theory it would still show the sub categories in the results because they are still apart of that top category, but I just dont like if you select a top category, then you wanted to narrow it down to a sub category you would have to unselect/clear the top and select just the sub category instead of being able to select a category, then narrow it down by selecting your choice subcategory.
