checking 777 'permissions' before downloading w3 total cache?

  • how important are checking my 777 ‘permissions’ before downloading w3 total cache? — because i do not know what that means … if it is super important, can someone explain where i find the place to check them please?

    i am using the basic default theme of wordpress at my site, https://www.lewiscountysirens.com

    i only have the most basic knowledge to have created my site, so you can answer like i know nothing at all … thanks!

    okay, i figured out where they are, changed them, downloaded and installed the plug in – but after i clicked ‘activate plugin’ i find i cannot see my dashboard … any ideas what to do? seems like i’m advised to delete the suspect plugin, but darn, that would be w3 total cache which i want ….

    if anyone can help, please do. now i deleted the w3 total cache plug in thru my file manager on my web host control panel, and my web site is available again, but i get this message below instead of getting my dashboard …

    “W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please re-install plugin or remove /home2/lewisco1/public_html/wp-content/advanced-cache.php.”

    help please ??

    i figured out how to get my dashboard back, but now i fear another attempt at adding the plug in “w3 total cache” … which i’d sure like to use.

    any ideas why the plug in caused probs for me? thanks.

    i tried again to download the plug in, and same thing happened. i wonder if i changed the permissions in the wrong files? are there some that look similar to the ones i was supposed to change, but are actually different ones? i wonder …

    The permissions change helps with some hosts that don’t allow PHP to create files. The change is temporary and should be reverted after plugin activation.
