Checking for the last page of the post

You can check it with get_query_var():

<?php
$paged = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1;
echo "this is page " . $paged;
//this is page 3
?>

If that doesn’t work try it with:

<?php
$paged = (get_query_var('page')) ? get_query_var('page') : 1;
echo "this is page " . $paged;
//this is page 3
?>
