• My client has a pretty basic WordPress site hosted by Fasthosts but the automatic update function has failed the last three times. They’ve had to pay me to do a manual update but this is obviously not a satisfactory long term solution. The fault is always along these lines:

Download failed.: The checksum of the file (c050871bc7db42cfef4517233ffed2e8) does not match the expected checksum value (23438fafd6093ce84414842cdd714a6b).
    Installation Failed

Neither of those two checksums match the published MD5 sum of the ZIP file:

    804f1fe8cf3c6858eba9df172f82c895

The above is the published MD5 sum and matches the checksum if I download the ZIP manually and checksum it.

Any suggestions where to start looking? Is it a Fasthosts problem? Why do neither of those checksums in the error message match the published checksum?

An additional thought – I’d not happy at all with the responsiveness of the website on Fasthosts. It’s taking what feels like at age to move between pages, e.g. 30 seconds to switch from the list of inactive plugins to active plugins. Could something be timing out?

I’d ask fasthost if they’re caching or proxying the connection to www.ads-software.com (and thus might be serving a corrupt (or just different) file.

    Hi Rob,

While I unfortunately can’t shed any light on the situation, I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one with this exact error, also from fasthosts. I have tried contacting their support about it and they have basically refused to do anything. They also claim there’s nothing wrong with their speeds which I disagree with. They’re advice to me on that was ‘pay for a more expensive package’. I am planning to ditch them soon as they seem to be nothing but problems.

Hi Toby – comment appreciated though as it does give more backing to it being a Fasthosts problem. My client is on the Momentum package which isn’t the bottom of the range at all – SSD disks and low contention databases, allegedly. Performance should be better than it is.

    Cheers, Rob.

Also experiencing FastHost issues. ManageWP always fails to update their plugins. Can’t manually upload a plugin or reinstall WP core. Time to move.

Just a thought do you have 2 wordpress language options to install – I had GB as my main and US. GB wouldnt work (came up with same error) and the US one did. I’m also with Fasthosts
