Child menu appears behind page content

This is my first attempt at a wordpress site and I am having trouble getting the drop down menu to appear above the page content. I have messed with the z-index and a few other things but I can’t figure it out. I set the page content to -1 z-index and that fixed the menu but the links in the content were disabled. Please help me.
