• Dear all, I reading about the child theme as I need to upgrade the new theme. The only explanation I can find is how to create a new child theme parallel to the creation and modification of a new theme. My problem is that I had already a customised theme and I don’t know how to create a child theme from an existing theme. I downloaded the child theme plugin, but the child theme does not get all the customisation I made for the parent theme. What files do I need in the child folder?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • If the customization was settings in the Customizer, you can use the Customizer Export/Import plugin to export your settings from parent theme, then switch to child theme and import them.

But if by customization you meant changes you made to parent theme files, there is no automated way to move those to a child theme. You could download the parent theme’s zip and extract it to a separate folder, then use a comparison tool like Meld to find the differences. Then make those changes in the child theme.

Hi Joy, thank you very much for your kind reply.
The e/i plugin did not work. I am going to try with the comparison method.
Can you tell me which file should I look at and, and how to copy the changes to the child theme?

    Thank you

You didn’t specify what kind of changes you made.
And no, I can’t tell you which file, because I have no idea what you have done. That’s why you compare the changed to the original — to see what was changed.
Be sure to read about Child Themes so that the styles are loaded correctly.

    Hi Joy,
thank you again for your help.
Right, I changed all colors, font, widgets, etc. The problem is that the main page is recognised by the child theme plug-in but the rest of the pages are all mess-up. The website is [ redundant link removed ]. if you want to have a look. So I must add manually other files? Functions, styles etc.? Once I made a comparison how to add the files to the child theme sheet? This is real my concern.

    Regards
    G.
