Child theme breaks on update

Hello,
I’ve been using a child theme with some customisation.
Now, I get the error
There has been a critical error on your website.
I observe even the presence of a single file from the old theme breaks this child theme – say, when I use the untouched header.php file from old theme in my child theme, I get this error.
When I copied the files one by from the new theme to the child theme and carried out all the required customisation, it somehow loads the site. However, I’m not able to import the home page settings.

I’ve removed all customised files in to a folder except the header.php file,style.css and functions.php.

If I replace the header.php file with the one present in the new version, the site loads, but it can’t import the home-page customisation.
