child theme, custom category template not working

    I created a custom category template in a child theme. I named it category-mycategory.php as from the instruction here:

    no luck. I renamed it category.php. no luck either. renamed archive.php, nah.

    made some other experiments with funny results: if all posts from mycategory were of the type image or gallery, the default portfolio grid layout would be used all the time.

    if just one of the post in mycategory was from the standard post type, then the custom template would be used.

    could you give me some hints on naming rules for custom categories templates?
