Child theme folders safe?

  • I am creating a child theme for BP, but the BP plugin uses folders for groups, members, etc that contain some php files. I copied these folders and their contents into my child theme.

    If I edit these will they be safe for future upgrades?

  • Whatever is in your child theme should be fine. It will only be updated when you update it. However, I’m not sure the plugin will use the copied files. It may continue to use the originals, in which case those may not be safe. Does the plugin have an option for reassigning the file location?

    Perhaps, but I don’t want to do that in case of a future update. I have tested this and it does work, so I think I should be fine.

    I don’t think you understood me. You mentioned the “BP plugin” and said that the plugin uses folders that you copied to your child theme. That plugin may continue to use the original folders, not your copies, which would mean that your copies will become increasingly out of date.

    Sorry, I think I should have been more clear. I created a child theme of the bp-default theme, which contains several folders for groups, activity, etc in the theme folder.

    In my child theme, I copied all of these folders and edited them to my liking, and it shows. I think the problem is that when I update Buddypress, these folders will not be updated as WordPress is using my child theme’s folders, not BP’s. How can I fix this?

    I want to be able to edit them in the child version, but still have it update and work.
