I am needing to make some core changes to the functionality in Alante Blue, however I am unable to create a child theme from this.

I copied the entire alante-blue folder and renamed to my-custom-theme. Then I edited the header in style.css to reflect the new theme details, but when I activated the new theme, the site was not appearing the same way, as though the CSS somehow didn’t copy over (despite having copied the exact files).

Can anyone tell me how to make a child theme of Alante Blue so I can edit without losing edits on the next update?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hello @iasher,

Please refer the below url to create child theme.

I hope the above was helpful.

    Kind regards,

This is not helpful, and your directions are inaccurate, unfortunately. The problem is not creating a child theme, but rather that Alante Blue is already a child theme and WordPress does not support grandchild themes.

I solved this issue myself and have come to call it a “sibling theme”.

    Here’s how:

    1) I copied the entire alante-blue folder and renamed it to custom-theme.
    2) I edited the comment header in style.css in my custom-theme directory with a new title, author, and link (NOTHING else)
    3) I copied all of the custom settings from Customizer in my original Alante Blue theme (custom CSS, theme options, background color, slider settings, etc). This had to be done manually by copy/paste to a note pad.
    4) After activating the new theme, I went into Customizer again and updated all of the custom settings as they were on the original theme.

    Thanks
