• Hi,
    I have a multi-domain hosting account.
I installed WordPress on 2 sites using Fantastico, then the hosting provider installed Softaculous and I installed WordPress on the third site using it.
I have 3 sites online. When I try to create the child themes for these sites they don’t work properly.
According to WordPress rules the child theme should be uploaded to /public_html/wp-content/themes.But when create a new directory for the child theme and put the style.css file there,it doesn’t even show into the site’s dashboard-Appearance-Themes-Installed Themes.
When I install it into the /public_html/varsha-desserts-n-cakes-classes.com/wp-content/themes(varsha-desserts-n-cakes-classes.com is one of the sites I am trying to install the child theme),it shows in the dashboard.
But when I Activate it,it doesn’t load the site correctly. The site appears all stretched over the screen etc. etc.
I have tried this with the themes-“bouquet”and “weaver-ii”.But the result is the same.
What is the problem with it?Unless I install the child themes correctly I don’t want to customize the sites,as all the changes will be lost once the themes get updated.

Thanks for reading my problem. Please help me in understanding whats the problem here.

    Thanks a ton for support.

  • You can download a pre-made Twenty Twelve child theme from here. See if that works for you.

    Sorry,esmi.

I’ve had a similar issue with the Custom Community Theme, I’m unable to get the child theme to upload completely. It appears in the dashboard as a ‘broken theme’.

@thoughtlife – please start your own thread for help with a different theme/issue.

For that theme, use the theme’s forum:

    Hi,esmi,
I tried it with the twenty-eleven child theme you provided the link for,but it doesn’t work correctly just like the other 2 themes.
    What can be the problem?
    Thanks for your support.

    I wrote to my hosting provider and the technical support’s reply was this;
    “Thank you for your patience.

I have checked that ”style.css” import URL is correct for the child theme. On further checking the wordpress forum posts, I could infer that the child theme folder should be within ‘/wp-content/themes/my-child-theme’ not inside current theme folder. Please move the child theme folder and check if the issue is still persisting. If it doesn’t, please check the following forum post to modify the import URL in style.css.

Where did you upload the child theme? If it is inside any other theme’s folder it will not work. Just install it (from your dashboard) as you would install any other theme and activate it. Or, as suggested by your hosting provider just move it to the folder named themes.

I placed it in the main wp-content/themes folder as well, but through ftp.
How shall I install it through dashboard?a s a zip file?Because if I upload only the style.css file, where will it be placed. It should be placed inside the child theme folder.
    Thanks

Do you find a child theme in your installed themes (uploading only style CSS file is not enough)? If not, just download a child theme as esmi suggested from here:
    https://quirm.net/themes/twenty-twelve-child/

After that, go to your dashboard (appearance > themes) and install it and activate it. It will work.

I did it and the result is still the same.

You can see the result here.

It’s the Weaver II theme. Do you find Twenty Twelve child theme in your installed themes? Did you activate it?

    (@ambika-poddar)

Yes,I have tried to install it from the file esmi provided and the result is same.

Is this where you are putting it?

    themes
        twentytwelve
        twentytwelvechild
style.css (new one for the child themea)
