Child Theme Questions

    I currently have a sub domain at https://www.test.nesasales.com running the vantage theme. I am working on this site in the background to replace my live site. I am more of an amateur when it comes to coding. I have a couple questions about making a child theme…

    1) Vantage has a site builder plugin to customize the site, if I do not create a child theme and update the theme will these customizations be overwritten?

    2) If I screw up creating a child theme in the worst way possible for the subdomain, it will not have any effects on my live site correct?

    3) If I never create a child theme and just decide not to update the theme so I never lose my changes, am I still able to update the version of wordpress without affecting my theme?

    1. If you customize an *files* belonging to the parent (not settings, but files), they will be lost when the them is updated.

    2. If that’s not the active theme, it will not affect it.

    3. Yes but if there’s an issue with the theme and you do not update, you may be leaving your site vulnerable.

    1) the Vantage theme I am using has Pagebuilder plugin by Siteorigin installed. It lets me customize and use some css styling. So would I need to see if these changes are stored in the parents files to know if an update will affect them?

    2)I have https://www.nesasales.com which is the live website for my customers to use and the subdomain test.nesasales.com which I want to eventually make live. So even though one is the subdomain test.nesasales.com if I mess that up it will not affect https://www.nesasales.com?

    1. I don’t use page builders. Please post a question in Siteorigin’s support area regarding that plugin and theme.

    2. If the sites are not sharing files, breaking one will not break the other.

    And just to confirm, updating to a newer version of WordPress doesn’t do anything to the theme correct?
