Chrome Push SSL

    I’m a bit confused about getting chrome push working on my site/server. Do I have to run all of my web traffic through an https link in order to make this work? It doesn’t really make sense for me to run a wordpress blog through SSL for every single request, just so I can get push notifications for users on chrome. I’d love to have chrome users be able to get these notifications, but the additional setup and resources involved seem to not be worth it at the moment. Hopefully I’m missing something, but if it’s the case it’s kind of disappointing.

    Hey C,

    I totally understand where you are coming from, and wish I had a better answer for you on this, but SSL / HTTPS is a requirement that Google has put in place to use Chrome notifications.

    We wrote a post about this on our blog called Chrome Security – SSL Keeps You Safe. In the post we reference a post by Matt Gaunt, Google Developer Advocate, where he expands a bit more as to the why of the requirement. For brevity, here is his post: Push Notifications on the Open Web.

    We are doing everything we can to make this as simple and straight-forward of a process for our Roosters. I hope that you understand and that we can eventually help you out with Chrome notifications.
