    Hi,

My parent-child taxonomy is displaying inconsistently when I use SmartJetFilters on the front end, so I would like to confirm that my backend is setup properly. I am a new user of WP and not a techie, so would appreciate the clarification

    1. I have created a Custom Post Type ‘Food & drinks’
    2. Within that I have created a taxonomy ‘Cuisine.’ Is this the parent?
    3. Inside ‘cuisine’ I have 10-15 sub-categories eg, British, Indian etc. Is this what is referred to as ‘child’
    4. In order to correctly link the children to the parent, I see 2 possibilities. Which is correct? When I create a new child,
    A) I can leave ‘parent cuisine’ filter to none (default selection) OR
    b) I can create a placeholder parent and link all the children to it?

    Thanks for your help
    Radhika

Some things to remember is that it’s more or less the terms that get described, within the context of a taxonomy. So if a taxonomy is hierarchical, then the terms become the parent/children.

For example, a “genre” taxonomy, with terms of “rock n roll” then a child term could be “alternative” and then “grunge” and then “pop”, etc.

The two built-in default taxonomies are “category” and “post_tag” like you see on blog posts.

So for item 3. for you, if “cuisine” is a term in this taxonomy, and “British” is a child term, then yes cuisine would be the parent. However, at least the way you’ve worded it, “British”, “Indian” would all be just terms, with no children and thus also not parents.

For item 4. perhaps making a term of “Cuisine” would be best, so that that can act as the parent term AND at the same time, be the taxonomy itself.

    Hi Michael,

Thank you so much for this explanation! Its the best I’ve found on the internet so much. I get it now and its super helpful. Trouble is that I just learnt JetSmartFilters does not work with children, so all my terms will need to be setup as you said without parents or children, just under the main taxonomy.
