• Sometime in the last 7 weeks (since I last posted to my site), something has radically changed with the Classic Block. When I Choose Block, and click Classic Block, and then I paste text from a Word doc, instead of staying as one single block where I can also add media, it is automatically changing every heading and paragraph to a new block. Every “enter” in the text is now creating a new block.

The primary problem I have with this is that I can no longer add photos and have them line up with a Heading. They are now in a separate block either above or below the heading.
I tried using a Container, but there are no options to align everything in my standard Blog Format. All options are ugly.

I have not yet tried my more complex posts that have tables or bullets yet. I am simply wanting to resolve this automatic change from Classic Block to multiple Paragraph Blocks!

Please Note: My knowledge of web design is very minimal. I learned how and created my site, with a little coding help from a design company. And all I am trying to do is add posts in a quick and easy way, but I no longer can.
I am using WordPress 6.7.1, and Astra Theme with Child Theme. But I’m pretty sure this problem is a backend WordPress editing issue.
Thank you for Any Help you can give.
    Cheers

The issue arises because WordPress has updated how the Classic Block handles pasted content, automatically splitting it into blocks. To avoid this:

    1. Paste the Word document content into a plain text editor first (like Notepad) to remove formatting, then paste it into the Classic Block.
    2. Alternatively, install the Classic Editor plugin, which restores the old editor functionality.

No coding is required for these solutions!

You can consider installing the Classic Editor plugin, which replaces the block editor:?https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/classic-editor/

@dilip2615 Thanks for your suggestion, but sadly, it does not work.

As soon as I paste the text from Notepad into a new post, it still converts it to multiple new blocks.
And now I also lose all of my italics and bolds, which I then have to go back in and redo.

I also use multiple different blocks in my posts, so I cannot use Classic Editor.

@linaasenova Thanks for your reply and suggestion.
However, I use multiple different blocks in my posts, so I cannot use Classic Editor, as I would lose access to them.

    Thank you .

    @dilip2615 Thanks ??

When I Choose Block, and click Classic Block, and then I paste text, instead of staying as one single block where I can also add media, it is automatically changing every “enter” in the text into a new block.

The problem I have with this is that I can no longer add photos within the block and have them line up with a Heading. They now have to be in a separate block either above or below the heading.

I tried using a Container with 2 blocks inside it, one text and one image, but there are extremely limited or no options to align the contents. And so, I cannot achieve the simple neat positioning I used to. :/

If you look at the two images within this post on my website, you can see the alignments I need. But I just cannot find a way to recreate this since the last update.

@dilip2615 I have now published a new post with the best I can do with the new WordPress.

If you want to compare the old version (in the last message), you can see it here: https://authenticblaze.org/principles-are-not-weapons/

Comparing the two will show you what I am trying to achieve, better than my written words.

I am now experiencing the same issue since I updated WordPress. It looks like no one has helped you here on the www.ads-software.com site. Did you get any help elsewhere @bluephyre or figure out a solution to this?

I use the Classic block for the same reason you do, so I can add images, for my purposes I use a left or right alignment and want the text to wrap around the images. This is hard to achieve with the other blocks, even when using columns.

Hello @donnamiller, Sadly no. I have neither found support elsewhere nor figured out a solution – despite trying many times now. I even wrote to my Theme team, and they have not been able to help either.

I also use the left and right image justification inside the Classic Block, and also, I have found no way to do text wrapping. No arrangement of blocks or containers of blocks works. I have searched and tried so many types now. But none work. All I want to do, is be able to load posts to my blog, it shouldn’t be this hard.
And I am also deeply frustrated about all my italics and bolding being removed. It is a lot of work to find and replace them all, especially in my longer essays!

All in all, this latest WordPress Update, has been a serious downgrade!!
What I don’t understand is why this problem is not being mentioned more on here… as there must be millions of people who add images to words. How are they not all struggling and writing here, seeking answers??!!

Thanks so much for adding your comment here, and sorry I don’t have better news yet.

Actually, @donnamiller, I did find a partial solution a while ago, which may work for your needs.

If you paste your text in as a “Paragraph,” (which seems to happen automatically now) it will make the text into many blocks, you can then add a block above the first paragraph block (“Add Before”), and in that block add an image. When you select align left or right, the text in that block and the following Paragraph blocks will wrap around the image. (You can adjust the image size in the right side panel now.)
If your post starts with a Heading Block, you can also achieve this by adding another block below the Heading block, using the “Add After” choice.

In either method, I can no longer align my images with the Headings, they must sit above or below them! :/

I am not sure if this will help you, but hopefully…

@bluephyre Jocah I have found a solution! I successfully tested this over and over on a really long article and then did a couple more articles. It’s simple too. I was copying from an existing article from a PDF but of course you can do this if you are writing an article too. I copied each paragraph and pasted it, then instead of hitting ‘return’ to make a new line, I did a soft return by holding down the shift key then hitting the return button. Generally in order to make a space the same size as what the return key alone does you have to do 2 soft returns. In other words, hold shift + press return twice for each new paragraph. This keeps it within the Classic block still but allows you to create separate paragraphs. This has solved the problem for me, I hope it works for you too.

It’s almost unbelievable to me that WordPress has done this to the classic block while still years after switching to the block structure does not have a text and image block that is designed to look nice and allow us to have an image within the text in a way looks professional and well designed. The ugly and awkward looking implementation of the text + image block, creating huge gaps above and below unless your photo is exactly the same height as the text is useless in the case of a magazine format with text and images. Even the need to keep the classic block around because they have not come up with a decent text+image block is really lame of them. Then they make this change (for what reason I cannot imagine, seems arbitrary) trying to force us into using the paragraph blocks. When they do things like this I regret updating my WP version, and it makes me consider not upgrading on sites where I haven’t yet, even though I am really good about upgrading and understand the security fixes are important.

    (@bluephyre)

@donnamiller Thank you for your reply. I am glad you have found a solution that you are happy with.
It sounds like a lot of work to paste each paragraph one at a time! Sheesh.

Did you follow my partial solution, or find a way you are happy with, to insert images and have the text wrap?

I thank you for replying with your workaround, but sadly this does not solve my two biggest problems…
    1. All the bold and italics being removed.
    2. Not being able to align images with headings and still have the following text wrap around them – without big ugly gaps, as you mentioned.

I might start another two threads with each problem listed separately.
Like you, I cannot believe WordPress would do this, when there is no viable alternative!!

I now wish I had used a 3rd party site builder, as apparently they are unaffected byt these latest changes.

PS: Sorry for the very slow reply. I can only think about this problem infrequently due to the frustration it is causing me.
And also because it plays into my unfortunate relationship with tech – we always I seem to be very estranged. My friends often tell me I should be a Beta Tester, because if it can break, it will for me. LOL
