Hi, I just read in a review that once can use the Classic block much like the Classic editor.

    And so I tried it:

    1)
I dont see a way to insert an image. The editor buttons do not include an Add media button. Is this intentional or am I missing this just in my site?

    2)
    The block description says:

It’s the classic WordPress editor and it’s a block! Drop the editor right in.

I dont understand what this means – It is already an editor so why would I drop one in? If I did want to do that – drop the editor in from where??? How would I drop it in??

I hope you are well. Happy to help get things sorted out.

    1. Using Gutenberg, open a new post
    2. Use the + to select which block type you want to add

From here there are 2 ways to go forward. The image can be added in to the text based block (like paragraph, or classic) by clicking on the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the editor. Select Document view and look towards the bottom to add a featured image to the post.

The other option would be to write your post up using the text based blocks, and then add an image, gallery, or video block where you’d like it to be sit in the post.

Gutenberg also supports multiple embed options. Click the plug sign, choose embed to see those options. HTML should also work, but I haven’t personally tested it out yet with adding images to posts.

    Hi @lizkarkoski,

I do very much appreciate you taking the time to let me know your thoughts.

I should have been more clear as to why I was aksing:

The reason I would like to insert an image into the Classic block is because this is to me the only way I would use Gutenberg – ie a single block like the Classic editor. I had read by some reviewers of Gutenberg that the Classic block acts just like the Classic editor, and so people should not review Gutenberg badly.

I am aware I can use separate blocks but I would never write a post this way.

The image can be added in to the text based block (like paragraph, or classic)

I created a Paragraph block and there is no way to add an image as far as I can see. There is no button to add an image and these are the properties of the block:

    Paragraph
    Add some basic text.
    Custom Size
    Drop Cap

Toggle to show a large initial letter.
    Background Color
    Text Color
    Additional CSS Class

Ie no property that relates to adding an image…..

Next you suggest a Classic block but like I said in my original post above, I do not see a way to add an image.

TBH I do not think there is a way to do this.

So I do appreciate your comments but respectfully I dont think that helps me.

    Then you also say:

From here there are 2 ways to go forward. The image can be added in to the text based block (like paragraph, or classic) by clicking on the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the editor. Select Document view and look towards the bottom to add a featured image to the post.

    Respectfully, that is not correct:

    1) By clicking the Gear icon it closes the Properties window. By default the Properties window is open when you create a new post, so clicking the gear icon it closes this. Then I do not have access to the Document settings.

    2) You say “The image can be added in to the text based block (like paragraph, or classic)” but then in the same paragraph you say it can be added to the post, which is different than a block.

The Featured image was always and still is associated with the post as a whole, and not any block.

The other option would be to write your post up using the text based blocks, and then add an image, gallery, or video block where you’d like it to be sit in the post.

I do appreciate you mentioning this, and I am aware of this but I think it is too many steps to do a simple write-up. I think the design idea of breaking a document into separate text, image, etc blocks, makes no sense at all.

That is why I was asking if the Classic block allowed images to be inserted.

Again though, thank you for your time in responding….

What I will take away from this is:

    1)

Even though the Classic block is called the Classic block because it is supposed to be like the Classic editor, or implies it is like the Classic editor, this is incorrect, because the Classic editor allowed one to insert an image.

So I think it is misleading to call it the Classic block if it does not have the same capabilities as the Classic editor. This block is actually a pure text editor. The Classic editor had more features.

    2)

So I do not think there is a way to insert an image and text and format that text in a single block…… So I will use the Classic editor plugin instead…..I think this is the only way to be able to insert an image into text……..

I did some messing around with this. Looks like if you have TinyMCE Advanced | www.ads-software.com installed then it will add extra items to the Classic Editor block that allows you to add Media, which seems to work. I’ve always had this plugin installed so I never noticed not being able to do it. Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/WXVtr1p.png

But, if your posts are just going to be one big Classic Editor block, then there’s no point in using the Gutenberg editor really.

    Hey @markrh,

I appreciate you messing around with this on my behalf ??

I installed TinyMCE Advanced and lo and behold, it does add a lot of stuff to the Classic block including the Insert menu > Add media, (as you show in your screen grab) which is exactly what I was looking for….

Thanks for solving this issue ??

I do agree very much with you that it would be pointless to use one big Classic editor block.

But I am researching this for my own curiosity and also for some others who are concerned their IT department will force Gutenberg on them – now they have a way to continue writing in a way they would like to (all in one text field / block). They feel their writing flow will be interfered with if they needed to chop it into blocks….

    Marking as Resolved…..

Just for reference, I believe the “Add media” button does not exist in the classic block because it’s meant to be just the classic editor, and the add media button was not actually a part of the editor it self, but rather a stand alone button outside that we hooked in after the fact.

I do see how that may be confusing though, but I believe the solution you’ve found works really well moving forward (and I can add that I am using the same approach on a few sites which I don’t think will be ready by the time things are released, to hold us over) ??

    @clorith,

Thanks for clarifying about the original design of the old classic editor.

I appreciate that you (& the devs) have included the feature of being able to add TinyMCEAdvanced to the Classic block.

As you say it will hold people over by allowing them, in Gutenberg, to still edit as they used to using the Classic editor, while being exposed to and hence learning all the new features of GB…

It seems the devs are currently saying that if peeps dont like GB, they can install Classic editor plugin. This removes GB from the eyes of those users.

Maybe consider telling them to install TinyMCEAdvanced instead, and then they can still edit like the old days but they will keep eyes on GB for learning and adoption….

Helpful discussion – thanks. This new editor essentially forces you to add one image at a time if you want them to display in the text rather than in a gallery. I’ll sometimes add 40+ photos in the text because I think it’s easier to view that way, and that would be slow going one at a time. This plugin allows me to continue adding multiple images in the text in one go which is just great ??

    Hiya,

This topic is more than 4 months old, as such I’ll be closing it as each reply sends ourt emails to a lot of folks, and we don’t want ot spam them.

Many things have changed in this time, including the block mentioned now having an add media feature.
