• Just a general question. Has anyone developed a good way to clean up the Media Library? There’s so many images, and then all the sizes that WordPress created.. I know there’s code snippets you can use to prevent WP from creating those sizes, which is good from the beginning.. But what if you have a mature site, with lots of images. How do we go about cleaning it all up so our sites aren’t so big due to so many image variations?

  • If all of the thumbnail sizes are used by your theme, then they all need to be there. If there’s any sizes that aren’t used you can use custom code to remove them.

For anything that’s already existing, one tool that I know works is the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin. When you do the regeneration there’s an option for “Delete thumbnail files for old unregistered sizes in order to free up server space. This may result in broken images in your posts and pages.”. That will do exactly as it says. ??
