• Hi all.
There is a point which I’m not able to solve, or to understand.
I’m building a new site based on a child theme of Twenty Seventeen.
There are many useless files which I wish to definitively cancel from server:
    1) files in media library: I regularly cancel the useless files, but when I check
appearently they are cancelled, but when I check with a client (like Filezilla) I see all my cancelled files still there
    2) autosave files: since I often click on publish, and make several tests, there are hundreds of temporary files

All this remains on the server (and it is very heavy): sometimes I think to cancel all from the domain but never did because worried … might be a register inside WP that recorded such files and if I manually cancel could be a problem.

Also do not use all the solutions such us plugins or directly emending some php:
because I use the “uploads” folder like a sort of “storage” of all the external files which I use (added html pages, some css and js stored there):
if I use a plugin the program probably sees those files as “not used” and cancels them.

    What to do?
How can I throw away all the useless waste? Manually? I can do, but ask you to be sure.
    Thank you

What do you mean by useless files?

autosave files: since I often click on publish, and make several tests, there are hundreds of temporary files

Autosave does not create files; it creates rows in the database. You can use plugins like “WP Optimize” or “WP Sweep” to remove those.

    Thankyou Steve,
and sorry if I did not specify:
for useless I mean that I upload dozens of images for tests, then discard at least the 70% and after chosen cancell all the rest.
Or f.e. decide a background image, then change to another.
Same for the HTML, js and stylesheets (whih for my decision preferred to put in subfolders in same path):
cancelling, I was sure to erase them definitively.
But when go ftp with Filezilla I see all still there.

    ??
They are not related to some existing pages.

(thanks for the info about autosaves: now I can use WP Sweep)

If you delete images from the media library, they’re deleted from the file system. If you just remove them from a post, they’re left on the file system.

So, go to the Media Library, select the images you no longer want/need, and delete from there.

Steva thank you for your patience.
What you are saying is what I reularly do, cancel all from media library every week.
Also (recently) tried a plugin “Extend Media Upload” to create subfolders and cancel them directly.
But (with or without the plugin) you could not believe:
when I go to the domain and look at the folder the files are still allthere.

    ???
Do you want to see the backup?

What do you mean by “cancel”?

select the files to delete and click on “delete definitively” (or don’t know what’s in EN version, I have in IT “cancella definitivamente”)

OK, so let’s try a simple test. Upload one image file to the media library, then delete it. Does the file get removed?

    Thread Starter Mauro Vicariotto

    (@mrosfy)

yes Steve, when you delete it, the file is removed from the list in list appearance
(I can repeat the test this evening (IT Time Zone, I’m in Italy now).
I have only one doubt (as said I have the descriptions in IT, don’t know what is in EN).
When you see at the list of the uploaded media (columns) at the third col (“loaded on”) the 99% of my images result “not attached”.
This is because I use such library for all purposes (f.e. for backgrounds), while “attached” means “applied inside a page” (or something like that).

I”m asking whether it’s removed from your file system, as that seems to be the issue you started with.

Upload a file. Is it in wp-content/uploads/something ? If you delete it, is the file removed?

    Thread Starter Mauro Vicariotto

    (@mrosfy)

    no, it isn’t
anyhow this evening I will check again

looking better it seems that this issue is caused by the domain provider (Aruba.it).
they offer you a package including WP: but (not sure yet!) it seems that they include a strange backup system which “backups also what you delete”

    not sure
