Clients website on subdomain of my website?

    I have a client that I can’t meet in person with to show them their site on my local server.

    My question(s) is/are:

    Is there a common practice for this sort of thing? By this I mean is there a generally accepted way of launching a clients website privately for them to click around and take a look?

    Would a subdomain on my personal website work for this? If so, can I make a separate WordPress install to run it from?

    If I have the right idea but am looking at the wrong methods, can someone point me in the right direction?

  • What you’re proposing is very normal and is a standard practice for most devleopment companies. What you’re thinking of is called a “staging server” and it’s used as a preview of the site so that your client can look around and ensure that they are happy beofre they pay the final bill and get the site transferred to their server.

    As for the domain, some places use a sub-domain of their main domain, others use a sub-folder, and others register a generic domain anme and use the sub-domain/subfolder there to keep things a little more “white-labled”. What you decide to is up to you, but eahc of those methods will work fine.

    You also should always use a new stand-alone installation when you’re developing like this. While it’s possible ot do in multisite, it’s a lot harder to extract the site from a multisite installation then it is to just copy the files and database from a stand-alone installation.

    Thank you, that’s what I wanted to hear but I didn’t want to sit down and do a bunch of tinkering for the wrong reasons or in the wrong direction. Staging is set up and working now! Thanks again!
