• Hello, I have cloned an existing (live) site so that I could work on a major overhaul. The cloned site lives in a subdirectory on another server. My question is, have the followers who are subscribed to the live site been carried over to the cloned site? (I couldn’t find where to view them.) If yes, are the followers are getting an email every time I create a new blog post or page on the cloned site? I tried to figure out where to set the site’s privacy settings but couldn’t find that anywhere – the forums I found that said how to do this were for earlier versions of WordPress. Thank you!

  • What plugin are you using to let people subscribe to your site?

I inherited the site from someone else. It looks like “Subscribe to Comments Reloaded” is the only subscription plugin. It seems like the way WordPress works is that users control notifications on their end, and there isn’t a magic setting somewhere to “suspend all communications” on a site while working on a test version? (I’m relatively new to WordPress.) If you can recommend a plugin that does this, that would be great. Thanks.

You should be able to simply disable the plugin in the staging site to keep notifications from going out. Perhaps add your own email account to the staging site subscriber list and test it?

My question isn’t how to disable subscribers, my question is how to disable subscribers getting notified when there is a new blog post or other update. I’m having to completely rework the site, delete blog posts, add new ones, and I don’t want the subscribers getting emailed every time I tinker with a blog post or page. It’s looking like the only solution to this is to delete all subscribers from the cloned site and manually re-subscribe them when the cloned site is eventually ready to go live, but that seems like a really inelegant solution. Surely other people have run into this issue?

Disabling the plugin will (should) prevent the plugin from watching the posts and notifying anyone, because the plugin is disabled (which contains the mechanism for notification). Simply re-enable it once you’re done making your changes. Nothing else should be affected.

Great, will try it. I wish there was a way to test it without spamming everyone on the list if it doesn’t work. Thank you!
