it’s not elegant, but i hacked together a solution using jquery as i don’t know javascript.

jQuery(function($) {

    $("#smp_menu nav ul li a").click(function () {
        $("#smp_menu").toggleClass("close");
        $("#smp_menu").removeClass("open");
        $("#smp_menu").removeClass("close");
        $(".menu-icon").removeClass("open");
    });

});
