• Hi guys,

I need your beautiful minds to help me find the right option on a host.
I want to host it in South Africa, as that is where my clients would be, if it would make any kind of difference.

    Plan

I want to start a WordPress Multi-site, where I can host more that one site with different domains.
I want to start a couple of blogs of my own, and
Build a couple demo sites for potential clients, and
host them on my multi-site installation if they wish to do so.

    Questions

Is cloud hosting the right option?
Who do I host with? – At this moment Afrihost seems to be the best option, but their sales pages doesn’t give a lot of information.
    Managed or self managed?
This question might be best left to the service provider but… How would I manage my clients’ domain specific email addresses?

Answer all, or answer some. All information and opinions are welcome.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jan!

Per the forum guidelines, any posting about specific hosting providers will get shut down. This is not the place for that. But some of the more general questions you ask about hosting multisite are entirely appropriate, since multisite often has some special requirements.

The domains question you are asking is solved by using a “domain mapping” plugin for multisite. There are a couple out there. This one is in the repository: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/

You can read up on the details on that page, and I do believe there are other setup options, but I make use of this by using subdomain type multisite, with wildcard domains in my hosting account. The subsites are created as subdomains in my network first, then mapped to their “outside” domain. This mapping can be turned on and off, by the way.

Which brings me back around to hosting: if you want to pursue this sort of setup, you would need to make sure that your hosting provider allows wildcard subdomains.

While I think there are some managed WP hosting solutions that allow multisite, I’m guessing that most people who are skilled enough to set up multiiste like to be a little more “hands on”, and do self-managed hosting for it.

    Hi Bet,

Oops! I coppied my post from another forum and forgot to take out the hosting specific part.

Thank you for the rest of the info.

    Hi Janwest,

I would suggest you to chose USA for your hosting location instead of south africa as the local govt has certain content policy conflicts with DCs.

USA is more secure, cheap and advanced in terms of technology. Also you will get a vast range of hosts to chose from.

    Cloud or not

I strongly recommend you to chose a Managed Cloud Provider as I am using it for my multisite wordpress blog. Believe me, it is just amazing with a cPanel on it. The scaling option and the pay as you go model of Cloud is flattering.

Let me know if you have any questions about cloud hosting.
