• Dear supporters,

I’d like to open the blog up to large groups of users, with Author roles for new accounts. There’s a risk Authors will use options that will damage the site or business.

To avoid that I should limit their CMS options, in the dashboard and when creating a new post. It’s a fixed and specific need that will not change any time soon.

I’ve included some screenshots and details in this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wmCTlCKt0eEiH9VBzDfYnzHMPkFG5PEKV3xy_vcQUc4/edit?usp=sharing

Any advice on controlling user environments for the safety of the site and business, and on any preferred plugin, would really ease my burden here … ??

    All the best
    Bert

    Hi Burt!

Unfortunately, I’m not able to view your Google doc.

You can always control the capabilities of particular users using one of several different plugins that allow you to fine-tune whether or not a user has particular capabilities. User Role Editor is one plugin, another is Members by Justin Tadlock.

Pretty much, Author-level users can only create and edit their own posts. Maybe you can briefly outline what you’re worried that these users might do?

Side note: @zync Please do not create multiple topics for the same thing. Those duplicates get deleted when found. Also don’t use all caps, that’s considered rude.

Have you considered the plugins that Bet suggested above?

The default WordPress roles are not bad at all but for granular control like that you really do need a plugin.

Sorry for overstepping, and missing that.
Thanks for your help, Members seems to cover everything.

Cool! I’ll mark this resolved, but don’t hesitate to open a new topic if new questions come up!

Can I keep this one open?

I was really enthusiastic when I started checking boxes to include and exclude options from the Author Roles, great UI. But the most important I need “Author Role cannot create New Tags or Categories (just select existing ones)” isn’t covered :-(!

I don’t know if I should abandon Members for an alternative, as it covers 99% just not the 1 most important …

Or should find somebody to code this extra bit for me?

    Thanks again

    [ No bumping please. ]
